1 Timothy 5:6
Comments
But there is another kind of widow. ‘She that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.’ She is not a widow indeed, because her husband may be dead but the world is still much too alive for her. ‘And these things give in charge’ – these things command. Timothy is to preach these things and we are to preach these things today. Preach them that the people may be blameless, both the widows and their families. We do not want their families standing in judgment before God, because they neglected the principles of family responsibility and care. We do not want the widows or anyone else having to be judged and disciplined by God, because they lived for this world. So, in order that they may be blameless, preach these things.
Application
It could apply to some of the widows in the ancient church, but does it also apply to some Christians who are not widows? You are formal believers. The world is not dead for you. You need this world. You need the pleasures you can get from it; you need it very much. Pleasure here is the clue to whether the world is still alive in your heart or not. And here is a basis for self-examination.
