‘Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.’ Do you mean to say, Paul, that what I do contributes towards my place in heaven? No, the apostle Paul isn't saying that. This isn't a works verse. It isn’t about the basis of your getting to heaven; it is about assurance, the conscious awareness that you are going to heaven. Perhaps the translation ‘good foundation’ is a little strong. One attempt at translating this, which is pretty good, is ‘paving the way’. It's about having something firm underneath you, but ‘foundation’ maybe is a bit strong. The idea behind this verse is that by Christian service and Christian support of the gospel and other causes; by being wholly given to the Lord and using your resources for him, you build your assurance because these acts tie you to the work of the kingdom. You convince yourself that God has worked in your life and changed the whole outlook of your life. Your interests are there. Everything you do is deployed for the kingdom of God. That's where your hope and your life and your expectation lies. Of course, it builds assurance. Laying up in store for themselves, a solid expectation, anticipation against the time to come, that they may lay hold, go eagerly on eternal life.
Application
So, if you want to avoid doubts and fears and shivers and trembling on your deathbed, or as the time approaches, be somebody who is given to the work of God in substance, in effort, in prayer. That will mean everything to you because it is what you cherish and love and desire and anticipate and work for. Bringing people into the kingdom by the power of the Spirit of God, you won't have the shivers and the fears and the worries that you could otherwise have had, but you will lay hold, you will go gladly into eternal life.
