There now follows a few verses there where there is a misunderstanding and we don’t want to make too much of this. He had told them in 1 Corinthians 16:5 what his travel plans were, but events had forced him to alter these plans. Some people among the Corinthians, may be some heretics that had got in from outside, they were trying use this to discredit the apostle. Not the majority of the Corinthians – you must not exaggerate this – but they were saying things like, ‘Do you remember when he said he was going to come and see us? Well, he changed his course, he changed his mind and he didn’t come, so he is an unreliable man.’ Discredit Paul, then you can bring in your own heretical doctrine. Undermine the apostle, and you discredit his message – and there were some people evidently trying to do that. The apostle Paul very firmly points out to them, ‘You know, I told you before.’ So the apostle explains himself. Why had he not visited them? They clearly had intimation that he intended to. ‘And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit; and to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.’ That was his plan. But he did not keep it. Why not? Because the situation at Corinth had compelled him to make an unplanned visit
