This term consolation and comfort, it all comes from a Greek term which refers to God drawing near to help. You will know the nearness of God and his assistance and his strength and his help. We know you are truly saved, says Paul, and we know ‘that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolations.’ Some think that what he says here is, our hope in you is firm because we know you will be willing to endure it. But a Reformed interpretation says that it means, you cannot have the suffering without the consolation as well, because God is faithful and that is how he works with his children. Our hope in you is steadfast. In some shape or form God will bless you. This is not in the crude sense that we give so much and we get back so much. You don’t get back in exactly the same terms that you give.
