There is a gentle sarcasm in verse 12 which we do not really expect in the apostle Paul but it is very gently done: ‘For we dare not make ourselves of the number’ – we dare not be like them – ‘or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves.’ It is complex in our rendering.
Does it not remind you of some people today, when you go to the god-channels – I do not recommend it – on the television, and you see all these people swaggering about, talking about their giftedness, and commending each other and boosting each other up, and they all have their publicists and behave like stage performers, commending themselves, encouraging and receiving applause. When you see that, you know they are not sound whatever they say; you know they are not genuine, they are phonies.
