2 Corinthians 10:17

‘He that glorieth,’ – boasts, takes credit for anything, desires something very strongly – ‘let him glory in the Lord.’ The apostle said exactly the same thing in 1 Corinthians and chapter 1 and verse13. He gets it without doubt from Jeremiah 9 and he adapts it to his purpose. He knows that the false teachers are carnal people, driven by sinful pride in all they do. They think that they are in competition with Paul, and they imagine that just as they are interested in boasting about the number of their followers, so too he is doing exactly the same. But really they have no insight at all into what motivates him. What drives him in his service for the Lord is something far higher than they can conceive, far too noble for them ever to have grasped it given their own mean-spirited outlook. Paul undermines his enemies by doing what they could never do. He does not seek his own glory but the glory of the one who sent him, the glory of the Lord who made salvation possible. As we read his words here, we rejoice that he puts his enemies to shame by his humble and gracious spirit which they could never equal.
Application
Do you have ambition? Do you have a great desire? Are you inclined to take the credit for something? ‘He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.’ That is what Christianity is about. It is God and his glory. Does the church increase? Is the church full? Whose doing is that? It is the Lord’s. We offend him if we think otherwise. If somebody is saved, who did that? Do we want to take the credit for the witness, or for the help, or even for the sermon? No, it is the Lord who does it. You see those television shows from so-called Christians on the god-channels. Who is getting the glory? The performer, the one who is applauded. When you or I are tempted to take the credit, glory in the Lord, give him all the glory and the praise.
