This church had an inferiority complex; Eden was back in Corinth. ‘There is something God is concealing from us. God is not giving us all we are entitled to.’ Then a touch of irony, ‘Forgive me this wrong. That is the only respect in which you could conceivably be inferior to other churches – that I was not burdensome to you in the matter of support.’He makes an appeal to their sense of deprivation. Tell a child he can’t have something and he wants it. This works in our favour sometimes. Luther’s books were banned and therefore people wanted to read them. Spurgeon came to London and people the press attacked him: ‘This upstart should not be heard.’
Application
Churches today are saying, ‘What do those other churches have?’ There is a tremendous follow-my-leader behaviour going on. We hear of churches which a couple of years ago were okay, but now they are seeker friendly and given over to new gimmicks. It seems that the churches are looking over their shoulder. ‘Why can’t we have songs like the world and stars in our midst to adulate, and ecstasies?’ Christians often fall in envying worldlings. ‘Do you feel deprived? You are not inferior to others’, says Paul. The antidote is there – value the word of God.
