2 Corinthians 12:15

‘Spend and be spent.’ This is Paul’s joy as a spiritual father to the believers in Corinth. What a wonderful discovery he had made. In a place where you are afraid for your life, you can glean great enjoyment because you are in the will of God, and whatever happens, you are advancing the kingdom of God which in a way that can never be reversed. If I am a preacher, I am privileged to be God’s spokesman to those who will be helped and changed by the word of God working in their lives.Paul speaks like a parent dealing with a difficult child. The parents love is so deep that it is not easily quenched. Even though the child does not reciprocate all the love and care shown to it, the parents love goes on finding ways to express itself. It does not give up easily because it is full of hope that the child will one day respond and see how ungrateful and unpleasant it has been.
Application
Do we imitate Christ and Paul in this matter? Am I ready to be gladly spent and be spent? Ready to suffer some disadvantage? By faith we see that the disadvantage is only in appearance. All the things that appear to work against us, God has a wonderful way of working for our good. At the same time our faith grows stronger as we deliberately choose what advances his cause over what benefits us in the short term.
