He challenges them to think about the facts of the matter. How in fact had Titus behaved himself among them? Had he operated on any different principle to the apostle? In Paul’s absence, had they seen a quite different approach from Titus? No, Titus had followed the same pattern, and it was no easier for the Judaizers to bring a charge against him. Certainly, they could not accuse Paul of profiting through Titus, even if Titus had accepted some personal help from them, to which he was completely entitled. Paul was confident of his co-worker, and could trust him to do what was right whether they were together or not. Titus also was committed to the gospel and the cause of Christ, and therefore he too would sacrifice his comforts and personal advantages for the winning of souls. He understood that it was better to remove from his life anything that might be misinterpreted as an indication of seeking personal gain.
