We see here the outcome of false teaching. Paul has sent Titus to turn their hearts back and now he is about to come himself.
Today, in the charismatic world, there are a 1001 false teachings and many of them may not seem to undermine the heart of the gospel – they are to do with conduct and worship and all kinds of other things – but they still have this effect: that they take people away from the exclusive authority of Scripture as a foundation, something which is clear and understandable. So they introduce to people the idea that supposedly admired and great teachers can invent things, can have revelations of their own, can apply their own mind to creating methods and ideas. As soon as you have got that, you produce people in the church who are at one and another’s throats, over-imaginative people, who will be creating ideas of their own.
