He did not want to come to them in heaviness, because they were a great source of joy to him. In effect he is saying, ‘What’s more, I have complete confidence in your capacity to repent, if I just write you a letter, without actually being there. So why should I come with a negative message which would be upsetting to both of us, when I can write to you these difficult things, knowing that you will respond?’ Now, the words are complex and difficult to understand but that is the essence of what he is saying.
