Paul now answers his own question posed in chapter 2:16. No one is sufficient for these things, but that does not stop God’s servants proceeding with the work, because there is another source of sufficiency outside of themselves. His answer – ‘Our sufficiency is of God.’ We can’t achieve this so that people are stirred.
Application
Sometimes we think we can achieve this, and that we are smart enough to accomplish this. ‘I am so good at handling the gospel now that, given the right circumstances, I can bring my hearers to think deeply.’ If the preacher were to shout, they might be stirred and tingle down their backs, but that would not be a bit of good spiritually. I heard a shouting sermon, and afterwards someone said to me, I will buy the recording and preach it myself, but hearing it later he said, ‘It has no content.’ Others want spectacle or sensation or music, but if God alone causes a stir in the heart, then I better work his way. And, if only God can make us capable, we better live holy lives, and we better pray.
