What Paul now says about his great confidence in the Corinthians and in the joy this brings him, is of course founded upon his confidence that God is at work in their hearts. The great change that has taken place in their lives through their conversion and their recovery from certain failings noted in 1 Corinthians is all a result of the work of the Spirit of God. To Paul they are a source of great comfort and encouragement because the Lord is at work in unmistakable and undeniable ways in the Corinthian church.But Paul also wishes to make them aware of his comfort because they know that he is not someone who would say such a thing lightly. They knew that he would not have said that he rejoiced over them unless he had thought very carefully about their standing before the Lord and had seen evidence that their attitude towards the Lord and his work was now right and showed their full recovery.Titus had seen this for himself and Paul trusted the judgment of one who was a key worker. Titus was refreshed because, having perhaps gone to them with some trepidation, he had seen their earnestness, their sincerity, their zeal to exonerate themselves, their anxiety to express their love for the apostle – all signs of spiritual vitality.
