We could almost take those words out of their position here in this verse because there is a great principle here. It refers not to lazy Christians, but to Christians like the apostle who were engaged in mission, who are serving the Lord, and as the result they have great trouble.‘Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down.’ It does not mean depressed. It means literally currently in trouble, thrown down; it is a very literal piece of language. The apostle was thrown down, attacked from outside, by persecutors, and anxious within about the church at Corinth. But when the Lord’s servant – and it applies to us too – is in a difficult position like that, God gives a consolation. God gives massive consolation, translated in our King James Version with the word, comfort.God comforted Paul, who was thrown down, by the coming of Titus. He was so comforted, but not just by the sight of Titus. His colleague was all right. He had not been arrested or struck down; he was in good health and he came beaming towards him.
