Perhaps our King James has chosen an unfortunate word in ‘repent’. The Greek means more here, regret.
Sometimes the trouble is, if we are exposed in some sin of word or deed, we are more embarrassed than repentant. That is not sorrow to repentance; that is a sort of embarrassment and self-pity, which will not cure the wrong, that will not put us right, that will not enable us to begin to make to progress again.
