Verse 18 brings us to something which is curious at first but very instructive about the priority of the gospel. Human curiosity has always come to this verse and said – who was this second brother? And much of the print in the commentaries is dedicated to trying to decide who the second brother is who is not named.
Today, a lot of people get it wrong, and people whose hearts are probably in the right place, and so you find many churches saying, ‘Oh relief and compassionate work is as important as the gospel’, and the illustration is used, they are two wings of a bird, and they are equal. But they are not in the Bible. Yes, if we have opportunity to do good, we must. But the gospel always has the priority. It is the chief thing and the main thing for us. So a brother is appointed, ‘whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches’, and it shows his heart.
