2 Corinthians 9:15

Finally, that wonderful verse which is about Christ. Paul’s purpose is to thank God for the incarnation. We do not know precisely the day of birth of the Lord; custom has given 25th of December. Unspeakable has bad connotation today, better to use the word inexpressible, not describable, impossible to do justice to. Paul probably coined the word. It refers to Christ. Some say it refers to the Corinthians, but that would be too strong. It is a characteristic outburst of Paul. God gave the greatest gift of all, Christ the Lord. And Christ gave the gift we all depend upon – Calvary’s cross and his atoning death and his imputed righteousness. He is the example and he is the Lord. By nature we are mean; with Christ in us and possessing a new nature, we have a giving ethos. ‘Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift’, a word which means that the narrative of Christ and the glories of Christ can never be fully expressed. They are so great and so extensive. We can talk about some of them on earth, and we shall be in heaven forever exploring the rest, and we will never finish doing so. ‘Thanks by unto God’ for the supreme gift which can never be fully described; it is so gracious and so wonderful and so kind. and that is the gift that should be stamped to some extent in every one of us.
Application
What will happen at the end of life if we have rejected such a one? If we cross the threshold as unsaved people, then, apart from the terror we feel, there will be a sense of shame, of foolishness. What a fool I was. I was a sinner but that would not have stopped me for he is gracious. Salvation was freely offered to me by God. His invitation to me was genuine. If I had responded I could have had this free gift with others have received. How did I come to this place? Among those who are shut out of heaven will be people who are highly intelligent, but they were blind to the gospel and they will be crushed.
