2 John 1:2
Comments
God’s truth has become an inseparable part of us at conversion. By faith we have received it into our hearts and opened every door of our souls so that it has free access to every thought and attitude within us. It has taken up residence within us never to leave us. The elect lady also has this commitment to the truth. She would defend the gospel and gospel light and there were special bonds established with every other believer. John loves her and her children in the truth and he is obliged to do so because of this bond between them. Ih he does not pray for them, he will betray the truth by admonishing her in the wrong spirit. It will be evident that he is not a man of love. Of course, there is a great hint of the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints in this second verse – ‘and shall be with us for ever.’ God does not give us his truth only to take it away again. Those whom he shares his truth with have that intimate relationship with him in their hearts. They have the Spirit of God dwelling in them for ever.
