As the Gospel was preached you heard the call of God. It is a wonderful thing, the call of God in the gospel. When you hear it and God works in your heart, it is a summons, a call to believe in Christ and to repent, and you must do it, you must repent. Perhaps you try many times asking for God’s forgiveness, ashamed of your sins, and now he answers you. It is a call to believe belief and to gaze at Calvary and to think in terms of what Christ has done in terms of suffering and dying for our sin.More to it than that, it is a call to follow him. You almost hear the words, ‘Follow me.’ I cannot any longer, you say to yourself, follow this lame world, and all the people I have admired, and those shallow celebrities, and people who have been expert in song and dance and all kinds of things, and sport and athletics. I cannot follow them, they are just men and women, and fallible and sinful like me. I cannot worship material things and the world. There is only one to be followed, and that is Christ the Saviour. And he calls and I must give my life to him. The master calls, and I will respond and come to him and bow before him. It is a personal call from Christ, and you want him, and you need him, and you will give him your life.It is a call to holiness, by his help, to strive in obeying his teaching and his law. It is a call to Christ personally, a call to holiness and a call to heaven, to be with him eternally. It is a call to eternity. That is our experience.‘To the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.’ Well you cannot have that yet. One day you will go to be with him and you will see him in his glory, and in a limited sense you will be like him sharing in his glory. Of course, you cannot share his divinity, but you will be made holy and share in his glory. That is what awaits us. But the promise is there, it is as good as ours.
