But then we come to the believer’s assured blessedness. The apostle seems to be shaking us gently by the shoulders. This is as if the prime minister is personally attending to your case. Of course, that will never happen, but our glorified Lord himself uses no bureaucracy. He with his infinite knowledge of all things is intimately acquainted with each one of us and knows our concerns. The apostle could not state it more clearly than he does. The word consolation could be translated counsel. It is the drawing near word. Christ who died for you personally gives you counsel. You come to him in prayer, you bring your needs before him, you seek his guidance, and, if you do this sincerely, he anoints your mind and blesses you with greater understanding than you would have naturally. What a privilege we have.‘Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father,’ no other, no less. ‘Which hath loved us,’ and proved it on Calvary. ‘And hath given us everlasting’ counsel, counsel that will see us through, ‘and good hope,’ anticipation of heavenly things.
