We are told a little about these preachers – ‘Which have borne witness of thy charity.’ When they got home and spoke to John and to others at Ephesus, they particularly mentioned Gaius. ‘Whom if thou bring forward on their journey’ – you pay their charges for the phase of the journey in front of them wherever they are going and make sure they are going to be alright – ‘after a godly sort,’ which is a phrase which means in the Greek, in a manner worthy of God himself. You look after them as God would look after them because you are his agent, his representative, that is your calling, that is your duty. This is a most important thing. ‘… thou shalt do well.’ No higher commendation ever comes from the apostle John than this. ‘Thou shalt do well.’ This is the way to serve the Lord. It is a prime duty. The evangelism beyond yourselves as a church is as essential as that which you do in your own fellowship.
