This is among believers particularly, ‘even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.’ Forbearing means patiently enduring.
‘If any man have a quarrel [better would be ‘a complaint’, ‘a case’] against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.’ As the Lord’s prayer is in the Gospel of Luke, ‘and forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us’ – the terms of God’s forgiveness that we are ready to forgive others. ‘Well, I will, if he apologizes.’ ‘I will, if she regrets what she has done.’ Sometimes it is necessary to insist on some kind of recognition of the offence, but not always, especially not with smaller things. We forgive, even if forgiveness isn’t asked for. Don’t forget that some people ask for forgiveness in different ways. They don’t always ask for it verbally. They may just mellow and they change their behaviour a little, or they stop doing what they did before – that is good, that is enough – forgive as quickly, as speedily and as totally as you can. Never withhold forgiveness, because you depend on God’s forgiveness; you have such a debt.
