Colossians 3:25

We cannot disobey the clear instruction of Scripture without consequences. Just as there is a reward promised for wholehearted service towards an earthly master, so there is something to be feared for not doing so. This does not come from the earthly master. Certainly, the earthly master may be angry about bad service, but that is not what is meant here. The warning given to the slave who will not serve sincerely is that the Lord will see this and he will recompense that bad service.You might call that a promise. ‘You let down your employer,’ says the Lord, ‘and I will punish you.’ When? In eternity? I suppose you could say that if you believe in grades in eternity, but I don’t think that will worry us much – to get one foot in. No, he means in this life. We will forfeit the Lord’s blessing somehow. God will not say, ‘Oh he is only a slave, is not reasonable that I should withdraw some of my blessing from him for poor service.’ On the contrary: that is your assignment from the Lord and he expects you to take it seriously. If the slave lacks respect he will be punished. He will compensate me for my lot, but I must be conscientious, diligent.
Application
Can we look back on the Lord’s dealings in our lives? Have there been bad times when we know we have not lived as we should and they have been followed by spiritual difficulty? May the Lord help us not to make excuses. God will not make allowances for our being in a disadvantaged position in this world. Provocation is no excuse. Watch out for Satan’s excuses whispered in the ear. They are only too easy to be received as true if we have a tendency to be focused on you rights and hardships done to us.
