Paul awakens us to the danger of these things with these great negatives: ‘For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.’ That is very profound too because the Greek word ‘cometh’ is actually in the present tense: the wrath of God is coming right now upon the children of disobedience.
On account of these things ‘the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.’ All sexual sin is punishable by God in the children of disobedience. Of course, we have died to sin; we are already declared righteous. How can we in any way go back to those things which bring the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience? These things belong to the rebellious world, fully against God and he will judge for this. Don’t you as believers get into any of these things.
How do we guard against covetousness? It is important to be very thoughtful about practical things in this life. It is perfectly legitimate to try to figure out what is the best quality and is what going to serve your purposes best. These things are legitimate for you to have a personal policy about how you spend your money and how you plan things. You have to do it carefully and as successfully as you can. But you have to be careful you do not become a covetous person, a greedy person, revelling in earthly things. There has to be that ceiling, that shut-off, because this sin is deeply offensive to God. Have you shifted your worship and your service from him to things on earth? In God’s sight that is an abomination, that is vile; it is not just a small slip.
