Believing masters are to feel they owe something even to slaves? That was unheard of. That virtually ended slavery in a way – it turned the slave into a servant.
To help him see these things in perspective, the master on earth is reminded that for him Christ is equivalent to his Master in heaven. Does he wish to be treated fairly, justly by the Lord? Of course he does. But how can he expect such treatment when he has not rendered the same treatment to others? Blessed are the merciful for they shall be shown mercy. This is indeed a high standard to live up to. Every day, the master is to remind himself that this arrangement on earth is only for a time and not for eternity, and that there is no intrinsic difference between him and his slave.
