Colossians 4:18 Commentary and Bible Study

Paul who often used an amanuensis signs off this letter with his own hand as evidence of its authorship.Remember my bonds, he says. This is not said out of self-pity, but because the thought of Paul’s bonds would encourage the Colossians to pray for him all the more fervently. We are to pray for all believers, but particularly for the oppressed. They are given a special place in the Scripture. Paul knew that the word of God could not be bound, but he did not know whether it would be the will of God that he should continue in bonds, or that he should be released to do further travelling and teaching. However God chose to answer their prayers he was content to leave the outcome to God, but he valued greatly their prayer.He ends with a form of words often used at the end of his epistles, and similarly to how the Epistle to the Hebrews ends: ‘Grace be with you all. Amen’. It is a petition to God and it is a blessing on his readers who know that God will hear this prayer. Grace comes from God and it is our need to the very last day of life. Every other blessing is encompassed within it, and it prepares the way for every good gift that God gives to us. All grace comes to us through our Lord Jesus Christ.
