Colossians 4:8 Commentary and Bible Study

‘That he may know your estate.’ The Greek literally is ‘all about you, all around you.’ So he will know your circumstances and comfort your heart. He is coming to ascertain your spiritual condition. He is coming to learn about your trials, he is coming to see your opportunities and he will show every consideration, he will see what may be needed by way of help and he will learn to appreciate the Lord’s work in your midst. That is the purpose of the visit there of Tychicus. Then that he might ‘comfort your hearts’ or, better, encourage you in the Lord. He will speak of Christ, he will preach of Jesus Christ, and he will speak of his glory. He will lift him up and speak of wonderful things and encourage you in the mission. If your circumstances are hard, he will point your mind to that great, forthcoming, eternal glory. He is at the disposal of the Lord, faithful to people, faithful to the Word. Of course, Paul tended to attract to himself like-minded people. Because Paul was himself like that, someone like Tychicus would be drawn to him and would throw in his lot with him. Well, Tychicus is sent to Colossae.
