For the reassurance of his people during this long period without a prophet, these detailed prophecies are given by God, showing as events unfold that his plan is still perfectly on track. He is sovereign over all, even over the enemies of his people, and they are able to do only what he permits. How many different and unexpected events are going to take place during this long period. Every decision, every betrayal, every political marriage, every act of intrigue, the rising of pride in every heart, the strength and weakness of each side, the outcome of every battle, the hunger for revenge, the distractions through the lust of the flesh, the fall of apparently invincible fortifications; all these things and many more will assemble like soldiers marching in formation, in order to align with God’s foretold purposes. How much attention this chapter would have received from the godly during those difficult years before Messiah came! How much confidence we can have that the promises of God will not fail, which take account of all the unexpected and seemingly trivial events in the world!
