This chapter in the Book of Daniel is fairly universally described as the hardest chapter in all biblical prophecy. The subject is ‘The career of antichrist’.
The remaining kings of the Medo-Persian Empire are passed over, and verse 3 will take us to the start of the Greek Empire, considerably later. John Whitcomb comments, ‘The prophecy now leaps over 150 years of Medo-Persian history. with no further discussion of the remaining years of Xerxes or of the reigns of Artaxerxes (464-423 B.C.), Darius II (423-404 B.C.), Artaxerxes II (404-359 B.C.), Artaxerxes III (359-338 B.C.), Arses (338-335 B.C.), and Darius III (335-331 B.C.) The highly selective character of biblical prophecy and history is essential for coming to grips with persons and events that are crucial, from God’s perspective, in the furtherance of His kingdom purposes.’
