From this point to the end of the chapter there is considerable variety of interpretation. Some continue to see a historical Antiochus IV described in these verses, but whereas the prophecies up to this point have a relatively easily understood reference to historical events, that is not true of what follows.
Antichrists were present from the very beginning of the New Testament; the apostle John tells us that in 1 John. More and more antichrist has been taking over and showing his power and his influence. Think of scientific humanism; think of atheism: ‘He shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god.’ The reformers thought that this was the church of Rome, and the church of Rome, of course, is part of the antichrist. But this rises even beyond the church of Rome. Shall speak marvellous things. There be tremendous intellectual attacks in the era of scientific humanism against the faith.
