Babylon has now fallen, Darius has been appointed by Cyrus the Persian conqueror to be the king of the region of Babylon, Darius the Mede. He is described in the previous chapter, the very last verse, as being sixty-two years of age.
After 539 BC the Babylonian Empire was gone. According to 2 Chronicles 36:22-23 one of the first things that Cyrus did was to make his famous proclamation to allow the return of Jewish captives, to send back the holy vessels, and to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem at Cyrus’ expense – the famous Cyrus Cylinder found in the British Museum. The scholars say that Daniel probably helped negotiate and frame this Cyrus edict. The Medes were normally barbaric, but God overruled and Danile continued to have influence and was even given high office. God was bringing all this about in fulfilment of prophecy. God is about to bring this about. Ezra has prophesied it. God ordained that Daniel would be there to supervise the repatriation of Jews. He was the linchpin in this.
