The previous chapter has recorded a vision in the 3rd year of Belshazzar during the time of the Babylonian Empire, but we now move forward to the 1st year of Darius the Mede, c 538 BC. Darius has been appointed king or viceroy over Chaldea by Cyrus.
Daniel the prophet felt it necessary to study the other prophets, and Peter tells us that all the prophets looked even into their own prophecies (1 Peter 1:11). They knew that the revelations they had received were greater than themselves and originated not with themselves but with the Spirit of God, and therefore they too could learn from them. God had ensured that the Jews retained their own Scriptures with them in Babylon, and Daniel evidently spent much time in the word of God. This was his rock and solid comfort in all the trials of the captivity. We too look carefully into the Scriptures which tell us of the return of Christ to judge the world. We study the events that take place around us to see if we can relate them to prophecy, and we watch to see how God unfolds history according to his perfect plan.
