What an amazing conclusion, what an extraordinary summary of life! How many people would ever come to this conclusion and express this as their deepest, most heartfelt conviction about the world, and yet this is what the Preacher has arrived at after all his efforts to understand the nature of life in this world and after sampling all that the world has to offer. Here then is the real theme of the book; this summarises all that he has to say to us and which he will expand on in the rest of the book: ‘Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
What are we to make of these words? The most important issue before every one of us is to understand life’s purpose and destiny. These words, and the passages following, help us. We should not ignore them, like those who rush through their entire lives without a single serious thought about its meaning.
‘Nothing I have tried has got me the satisfaction I wanted. I have nothing to show for a life without God.’ All you have tried to achieve is all meaningless. What have you built up that will last? Against eternity, all our achievements are vain and futile. We may say, ‘Well, that was his experience, but mine will be different. There are many things which excite me and which I intend to get involved in. There is tremendous potential in life. I have much to do, learn and discover, and I aim to make my life full and satisfying.’ But Solomon urges us to think this through, using many persuasive arguments.
