Ecclesiastes 10:14 Commentary and Bible Study

Another characteristic of the fool is his verbosity: he speaks so much, but he knows so little. He has so much to say about so many different subjects, but then you realize that actually he knows very little. He multiplies words, but his knowledge is severely limited, and he does not know one tenth of the things that he claims to know. He wanders here and there touching on subjects that lie entirely outside his field of knowledge, and yet he speaks with great confidence even of future things. ‘We know that mankind will grow wiser and wiser and will find solutions to all the problems that he faces on earth; we fully expect him to solve the problem of energy supply and greenhouse gases in the future. In the future we will be able to deal with pandemics. We will create a society which is increasingly just and fair and which will do away with hunger, oppression, injustice, and hostility.’ But because he is so limited, he does not even know what will happen tomorrow, and yet he speaks about the future with great confidence as if it was already revealed to him. Who can tell him about the future? Nobody, for he is not willing to receive instruction from God, who alone knows what will be tomorrow? The fool is stubborn, headstrong, and ignorant. He loves to hear the sound of his own voice and is less concerned about whether or not what comes out of his mouth is true.
