He now provides us a lesson from giving with a twist in the tail. This seems to be taken from the practice of the rich giving alms, portions of their substance, to the poor and destitute.
Seen this way, verses 1 and 2 are connected and both speak about the exercise of faith. Don’t be afraid of what you will lose in coming to Christ. What you will lose is far less than what you will gain and if you try to hang on to what you have as an unbeliever, you will lose it anyway. ‘He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life’ (John 12:25). We cannot have Christ unless we are prepared to come to him by faith, to take God at his word.
