Solomon now earnestly warns the young against the folly of pursuing all their happiness in this life, of thinking too highly of its experiences, and treating it as if it could deliver ultimate satisfaction. He wishes to warn, and yet he knows the wilfulness of youth and the power of desires that drive the young; he knows that the young man or woman will insist on getting their way regardless of the warnings they receive and that as they reach a certain age, the world with all its opportunities seems to open up in front of them so that they will not allow anything to stand in their way.
Do not be besotted with youth and its experiences. Do you imagine that because punishment for evil does not come immediately that God cannot be bothered to pass sentence or that he will forget your past sins? Far from it; all of our past deeds are recorded and will be recalled at the time he decides. You cannot live for even a single second without being accountable to him for what you do. There is no such thing as time off from the law of God. We cannot release ourselves from our obligation to obey his commandments. You may have thought that your sins escaped the notice of all your fellow human beings, but they did not escape the notice of God and instead you are storing up wrath against yourself which will be revealed on the day of judgment or even before that day.
