Even though he wrote by inspiration, the Preacher did not receive ready-made sentences from heaven by dictation. Instead, the inspiration of Scripture involved him using his mind to its full extent, carefully about what he was going to write and studying his subject with all his ability.
The Hebrew words translated ‘acceptable words’ means ‘words of delight’, or ‘words of pleasure’. We might respond, ‘It does not sound so pleasant or delightful; it is all rather gloomy.’ No, it isn’t. The Preacher has done his best to find acceptable words. He has been cruel to be kind. If God warns you, maybe your mind will open to the gospel, the best news of all. There is a Saviour who came to suffer and die. If any desire life, let them cry out to him: ‘Enable me to pray and have strength in the soul. Lord remake me.’ Call upon the Lord, come to him, and seek his healing power.
