Now the images become even stronger as Solomon uses the metaphor of a great house that is falling into ruin along with its elderly staff. He uses this to describe the aging and failing body, which in turn is a picture of the degenerating soul without God.
Ultimately it is about the deterioration of the soul. Maybe there was a time in youth when you had principles that kept you together, but now they are gone. You have lost your discernment and deep seated sinful habits have formed in you. A day is coming when everyone’s soul will fail. The keepers of the soul, those standards, the Ten Commandments, are weak and no longer influence us much. We ignore God and do as we like. Our character has run down. We give way to temptations. Our tastes become coarse. If someone says, I want to talk about your soul, you can’t take it in. We see this deterioration in society as a whole. Things are shown on TV now that would have been regarded as disgusting just a few years ago.
