The allegory continues: the doors that lead out on to the street are closed, so that communication with outsiders is greatly reduced. This a very old person who no longer interacts much but is now confined to the house and meets only those known well.
Old age has come in and greatly reduced the scope of life, but the soul can reach this stage sooner. Not only physical anxieties but spiritual anxieties disturb us. As we get closer to the end of life, one might have thought that we would think more seriously about our eternal destiny. But for so many the opposite happens. They bunker down and try desperately to shut out the thought of judgment to come. Nevertheless, yet small things trouble them and remind them that they are completely unprepared to face the Lord. If we do not think of God for long parts of our life, there is no communication with him. We do not know how to pray and never would unless desperately frightened at something. Now, I don’t know how to or want to communicate with God. God may just break through to you even before you reach this point. While you can, seek the Lord and do it as soon as you can, as earnestly as you can, otherwise your soul will harden and you won’t understand the gospel message even though it is simple enough for a child to grasp.
