There came a point when he was able to break free from the treadmill of seeking fulfilment in this world long enough to reflect on what he was doing. The word ‘looked on’ includes the idea of turning and therefore is best translated by a word like ‘consider’ or ‘reconsider’, for Solomon had previously formed one opinion of this world but now in a more sober moment formed another.
If men satisfy the flesh then the inward man still remains hungry. ‘Instead of yielding solid delight, they only proved vexatious, because the pleasure was soon over, and left a thirst for more. If all is without profit, then all motivation for life is gone. Why bother to strive to achieve anything? Does the Lord really wish us to arrive at this conclusion? Yes, for there is nothing better than that a man should see the vanity of his life and begin calling upon the name of the Lord. Conversion is a crisis experience, but it is often preceded by the awful realisation that there is nothing at all in this world that can satisfy our souls.
