Ecclesiastes 2:23

Man is like a slave driven by a cruel taskmaster, only that taskmaster dwells within himself and it is his own relentless desires that drive him on. Because they are never satisfied with what he already has, they can never let him rest and they end up reducing his days to a series of sorrows and his work, instead of bringing him pleasure and satisfaction, is a cause of grief and vexation. This is not what life was meant to be. Is man incapable of finding peace? No, but his recipe for happiness is one that is self-defeating. Work was designed to be a source of satisfaction and something that brought its own reward. It was designed to lead to a sense of achievement that fully compensated for all the effort expended. But the task that man sets himself is doomed to failure, since he finds himself wrestling against the mysterious vanity of this world that results from God’s curse on it. Even in the night when the body and the mind should rest from the days labour, he is troubled by worries and concerns about the frustrations of the day so that peace eludes him. He continues to struggle to solve the insoluble problems of the day and sleep which should bring rest is instead filled with restless dreams and fears.
Application
How wonderful to have peace and to enjoy the gift of God, who ‘giveth his beloved sleep’ (Psalm 127:2). This is possible only for one who has come to God for forgiveness, trusted in Christ for salvation, and obtained eternal life. Why should such a one worry about earthly goods and security? He trust in the one who has said, ‘If God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?’ (Matthew 6:30).
