Everything that we do today, is likely to need to be undone tomorrow. What enthusiasm therefore can we muster when we know that life may soon lead us in the opposite direction? Why do we become so engrossed in the purpose of the moment as if this was the only choice that we could ever make, when we know that the kaleidoscope of life will presently bring to the surface some new configuration? The young especially are likely to approach life with passion, convinced that their choices are the only choices that could ever be made; they are masters of their destiny and set their course according to their own unquestionable judgments. But what seemed precious to us once, may, through association with sorrow or tragedy, become an object of loathing or fear to us in the future. There is no sure gain nor any certain advance in this world, for in whichever direction we go, we can find ourselves coming back along the same path with a completely different and unpredictable set of motives in the future. All earthly goals are subject to the same fluctuations and wisdom will teach us not to set too much store by any of them. You have not got ultimate freedom because you are driven by appetites which you cannot control.
