This proverbial expression points to another way in which we can be distracted from facing up to our real needs and coming to the Lord for mercy. Human nature is weak, and human beings too easily blame circumstances for their ills.
The trouble is we never ask, ‘What is wrong with me?’ If we were to do so, we could not live with ourselves, until we went to God. Let the one who is seeking the Lord dismiss these idle speculations, and face up to the wickedness of his or her own heart. We may well be used by God to improve the general conditions of our age for the benefit of ourselves and others, but not until we have faced up to the depravity of our own hearts and come to God to pardon and new life in Christ. Without this, all manner of improvement of externals are no real gain at all.
