The awakened sinner learns to hear the world in a different way, to hear what he has never heard before. Previously the world seemed like a safe place, a place in which he felt at home, but now there is something alien about it.
The sound of a fool’s laughter seems convincing, but the judgment of God will give it a full answer. The truth is that he must face a lost eternity as condemned souls before a holy God. Will he continue to laugh in God’s presence? For a short time that laughter is able to create a mirage, a bubble of unreality in which men take refuge, but the light will consume it. Men would rather trust in their own imagination because they are on the run from God, but what a shock awaits them when they are called to give account not at a time that is convenient to them, but at a time that God chooses.
