What great and mysterious words are found in these next two verses! Solomon had set himself a vast task and he realised that in fact it was a task that was beyond any human being. He had aimed to explore all earthly goings-on and to investigate every aspect of man’s ceaseless activity.
To obtain wisdom you need to know this is a world in chaos. Keep in mind the work of God; it is important. However hard he tries man will not find out the work of God, what he is accomplishing by all that takes place. The world is chaotic because the human race is in rebellion against God. Do you think some of the great threats around today will ever be healed? There will never be peace in families, in trade and industry, or in nations. There is no fairness. A few years ago, it was communism versus humanism. Now it is humanism versus the new morality and in a few years what? These human solutions cannot solve society’s problems except at a superficial level for a short time. Some believe man is getting more moral and more civilised all the time, but constantly new examples of human cruelty and oppression emerge. We have politicians and we need them and we hope they are good, but they can never turn society into utopia. Be wise about man and his limitations. It cannot be done, not only because man is fallen, but because God frustrates him. He limits us whether as individuals or as nations. The key is to find the Lord and to know him. The purpose of life is for God to rescue men and women out of this fallen world and to bring them to know himself.
