Not only can a man not understand the whole, but he cannot understand the parts either. Even the twists and turns of his own life are a mystery; even the events that take place around him are impossible to predict, or fit into an overall scheme which makes sense.
There is a purpose, a deep purpose to life, but it is hidden from the view of mortal men who refuse to come to Christ as Lord and Saviour. Thankfully, the way to heaven does not involve the resolution of all mysteries, for as Paul says, ‘though I … understand all mysteries and all knowledge, … but have not love, I am nothing’. If salvation was dependent on this, it would be beyond the reach of all. There is in all this enquiry an inclination to bring God to give an account of himself to man, as if we are capable of fully understanding all the works of God in the earth. A man may know God and yet there may still be many aspects of God’s work in creation and providence that are currently beyond his reach. Eventually, we will grasp all things, but not until we are glorified. The Lord is to be trusted even when we cannot trace all that he is doing. This does not prevent God from being a loving heavenly Father to those who have sought and found him. Because he keeps much hidden from us, it does not mean that he will not open his heart to us and embrace us as his sons and daughters. Much may still be hidden, and yet in comparison to what we were before conversion, we have to say that then we were in darkness, now we are in the light. We have come to the Light of the world who has shown us the big picture of God’s purposes that we never saw before. We study his word and we grasp the plan of redemption. We love God because he first loved us and sent his Son to be our Saviour. We read the Old Testament and learn of all the types and shadows pointing to the coming Christ and his work. We see why he had to die on the cross for our sin, and we rejoice that he rose from the dead. We know that he has ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, and he will come again to judge the quick and the dead, and so we give thanks to God for all his mercies towards us.
