In this present world we are concerned about energy. What is going to be the source of energy in the next 20, 30, 40 years, if the world goes on, if Christ does not come again. We would do anything to get energy, whether it is nuclear, whether it is mined by the sweat of the brow of many from the ground as coal, or drawn up as oil. What human efforts to get energy! One energy source then fails, then another, and if it is nuclear energy, there are terrible clean-up operations to be considered at vast expense. But God is energy! We have Christ on the side of the church of Jesus Christ. All power, all dynamism, all energy. What a Saviour we have, when we go to prayer, when we are afflicted, when we are persecuted, when we are attacked. This is just for a season. Ultimately the age will be wound up, because Christ, who has all power, is made ‘head over all things’ for the benefit of the church. We pray to him and we follow him and we worship him.
We cannot ultimately be crushed. We can be persecuted, we can be hindered, we can be affected by all kinds of disadvantageous legislation and activity. But ultimately, because Christ has power over all authorities, he will only permit to happen to us what it is his will to permit and he will restrain, turn back the tide of hostility when he chooses. It is all for our sanctification, for our benefit, and for our witness. It is all in his hands. What an extraordinary thought. To the church, Christ even now has absolute authority over everything. Nothing can ultimately harm or hinder us spiritually.
