The apostle now speaks about two things: the wonders of salvation, reconciliation with God, and the amazing miracle of reconciliation of Jew and Gentile into one church of Jesus Christ. We can read about these things and somehow fail to grasp the significance of what Paul is telling us.
Somebody, I heard, was asked why are there so many food programs on the television? And the answer that was given to that person – it did not seem fitting at the time, but it was actually perfect – was, ‘Well people do not have Christ, so they have got to take their pleasure in food.’ Well, God has given us richly all things to enjoy and of course, you may appreciate food and cooking and things like that. But why the fantastic overkill? Because people do not have Christ. That is why there is addiction, that is why there is so much materialism, that is why the entertainment industry is the biggest of all industries, because people do not have Christ. It is the same with us. You did not have Christ. Your moods, your whole outlook and wellbeing depended upon worldly things, sometimes extreme things, salacious things. But now you have Christ and those things do not mean the same to you. You are not dependent upon them and many of the worldly things that you once enjoyed are now completely obnoxious to you, disagreeable.
