And the blood of Christ is at the heart of all this. What a contrast: at that time we were socially and morally separated, but now we are reconciled to God and to one another. It is a double miracle: reconciliation with God, and the reconciliation of saved Jew and saved Gentile with each other.All this is due to the precious blood of Christ. We should never think lightly of the blood of Christ. Sometimes you hear it said that the blood of Christ is only a symbol. Yes, they say, it was literal blood, Christ literally came and shed his blood, but it is really a symbol of death. Well there is an element of truth in that, but it is more than that. It is the precious blood of Christ. We think in a very particular way about the blood of Christ, and it helps us to love him and to appreciate him and all that he has done. When Christ was on earth, he shed his blood. Yes, but he was God. He was man, truly man, but he was God. There was never anyone so noble, there was never anyone so great. Dare I say it, it is foolish language, but all the men and women in the entire world ever born, take away their sin and only compute together all their merits and powers, and they still cannot be compared with Christ. Christ Jesus was the greatest man ever. He was the God-man, the man of love, the man from heaven, far above all monarchs and emperors. And yet he shed his blood. Astonishing, amazing. He showed weakness, he shed his blood and began to die and did die a terrible, horrible, painful death. The blood of Christ speaks. God came and gave himself to our situation, to our agony, to our death for us – he shed his blood. It is a mark of his willing humiliation in order to die for us. The blood of Christ – you have to mention it with reverence. The blood of the Holy One. The blood of the God who became man, that special, sacred, holy person. When he was transfigured on that mountain, with just a select few disciples, and his being shone with radiance and his full glory was revealed to those disciples – this was the one who shed his blood. He concealed his glory, but it was there.
