What will heaven be but a great unfolding, an exposition of the great love of Christ and his mercy toward his people. How astonishing, how amazing.
This is one of the purposes of salvation. Why am I left on earth? Why do I remain here after salvation? In order to show forth his praises, in order that I can be increasingly shown and I can increasingly seek to show to others the kindness of Christ in salvation. Then in heaven we shall learn and drink in these things in a measure unknown on earth throughout the eternal ages.
What are ‘the exceeding riches of his grace and his kindness’? Well, kindness, the kindness of God. Undeserved kindness to us illuminating our souls, drawing us to Christ. Grace so rich it overlooks everything we have been and everything we have done and Christ comes and pays the price and blots out all our transgressions. Grace, which is so rich, that it imposes no conditions upon us. Salvation is entirely free. Christ has purchased everything for me. It is not ‘Turn to Christ; repent of your sin and do this, and this’ It is just ‘Trust in him.’ The grace is so rich it is unconditional. The grace is so rich it gives me an eternal reward that I never, ever deserved, as if I did deserve it. So rich was his eternal grace; so rich that it gives me a new nature, a new life, a new hope, makes me a king and a priest to God. Now is the time to live a life with a modest lifestyle and self-denial and the struggle of sanctification and holiness, but then in the ages to come we drink in the amazing love of God through Christ Jesus.
